Unit X) The Republic of Texas: We dove into the decade-long existence of Texas as an independent nation by focusing on the opportunities and challenges facing it. We studied the solutions attempted by the opposing viewpoints represented by President Houston and President Lamar: work toward annexation by the U.S., vs. striving to remain and succeed as the Republic of Texas. Included in the discussions was the all-too-real presence of slavery.

This study included a discussion of the definite/probable/possible pre-Columbian arrivals; the food, plant, disease, and idea "encounter" moments of the Columbian Exchange; the motivations of the Spaniards (the 3 Gs); and the actions of the Spanish conquistadors as they moved to conquer the people and land of North America and eventually to Texas.

Unit IV)
While still focused on the native tribes of Texas and the manner in which they lived, this section of the unit moves forward to the historic era. That means that horses have arrived and transformed the continent, giving rise to powerful nomadic tribes. The majority of these groups are Plains tribes, with their lives revolving around the hunting, eating, wearing, and overall fully utilizing the bison.

Unit III)
People have arrived! At long last (a month, anyway) we are moving from maps and nature to actual, living Texans, the first humans to settle in North America: the Paleoamericans. We are learning about their lifestyle and culture, studying their artifacts, and thinking about the surprising number of similarities between our modern lives and their Ice Age ones of 10,000ish years ago.
But then the ice age has ended, and with it the Paleoamerican way of life; the Archaic Indians of Texas have emerged! Through the sweat of archaeologists and the power of technology, we have the opportunity to explore their homesites, clothing, tools, beautiful artwork, and other artifacts as these people adjusted to the warmer climate and disappearance of megafauna.

Unit II)
We are zooming in on our state in this unit to study the natural regions of Texas: Mountains & Basins, Great Plains, North Central Plains, and Coastal Plains. We will use maps, virtual tours, informational videos, interviews, and print resources to learn about the unique attributes--climate, geography, plant life, animals, industry, landmarks...--of each region. Maps and other creative projects will stem from this study!
